The other day I was campaigning in the Punjabi Market. I shop there often, but this was the first time campaigning for mayor of Vancouver — though I did manage to buy some shahee paneer for dinner.
This is such an incredible neighbour-hood, I kept saying to myself. People from across the globe have invested all of themselves in making their neighbourhood so vibrant and successful.
South Main is the kind of place that makes Vancouver a special city, the same pride that also nurtures and defines communities like Kensington, the West End, Hastings, Kerrisdale, Killarney and Chinatown.
As unique as Vancouver’s neighbour-hoods are, they share common concerns — safe streets, choked intersections, drug addiction, property taxes, economic opportunity, a desire to put an end to the bickering and division at city hall.
No matter where you live in Van-couver, these are the issues and concerns that stand out. And they are the issues that are driving my candidacy for mayor.
