It’s a case that New Westminster police have worked on for 14 years, the hit and run death of 3 year-old Megan Gunderson outside of her home in New Westminster.

A tipster recently brought forward some crucial information, but police are looking for more.

Grace had a PhD in Pharmaceutical Science. She published 15 scientific papers on her research into Huntington’s disease and other conditions that afflict thousands of Canadians. She was an accomplished artist, she captivated children when she met them, she never missed a day of church or failed to donate to charity. She was 49 when she was killed.

The man who killed her is named John Threfall. Mr. Threfall raced his car south down Maple Street and across 5 lanes of traffic on Broadway as the light was changing. He was in a rush to get to the liquor store.

Before killing Grace, Threfall had racked up 46 driving infractions including two for drunk driving and several more for driving while prohibited. After killing Grace, he added another speeding ticket to his record. He now faces 4 years in jail and a lifetime driving ban.

I have had to face many experiences that nobody should have to live through. My beloved wife Grace, my best friend, my partner in life, was reduced to a mangled, bleeding body, now brain dead, on life support. Holding her hand for 10 hours that night of July 25th, as many people worked feverishly in intensive care, trying to save her. The trauma of witnessing blood and tears rolling out of her eyes all night, blood and brain tissue oozing out of her ears, blood dripping from her mouth and nose, deep gashes, bleeding all over her body. A few short hours earlier, she was alive, a humble, loving, caring, generous person, surrounded by people whom loved her and who she loved and enjoying a life she loved and deserved.

The shock and disbelief that the doctor in charge was asking me for her organs to be donated just six hours after that fateful accident were too much to bear. The heartbreak of leaving the hospital at 4:00 AM, being told that as soon as I leave, Grace’s life support will be turned off. The horror of imagining over and over again in my head what her final minute of life must have been like. She was walking away from the intersection, and never saw the accident coming, no warning, no chance to run.

Instead of sharing my bed with a warm, vibrant, living, laughing, loving, breathing person, now sharing my bedroom with a lifeless urn with Grace’s ashes. Our cat “Cookie” and myself in disbelief, in shock, in extreme anguish. Completely and utterly lost for weeks turning into months. No hand to hold, no on to hug or kiss.h

Crying myself to sleep, night after night, uncontrollable tears during the day. This was hell on earth. So many good memories of Grace, so many reminders everywhere I go, everything I do. Living the sense of loss, the lack of direction, the pain, the memory loss, the fear and uncertainty of life, nothing I can rely on, severe depression, no reason to carry on, and the profound loneliness. Why Grace and not me? The nightmares going through my head over and over, about her final moments and all the sleepless nights. I was stuck in this place for almost seven months. Grace was my life and I was hers, she died for nothing.

Most of our friends were in awe of our marriage, and how it kept getting better. I was so blessed and so grateful to wake up another day next to Grace. I looked forward to waking up and seeing her rub her eyes, then smile, and her enthusiastic greeting each morning. Grace was truly one in ten million, and now she was gone.

Many of my good friends are now gone, no longer phoning or visiting me. Perhaps my friends that were couples could no longer relate to a single man, perhaps it was too painful for some of my friends to spend time with a grieving, crying man. Maybe it was a fear of their own death? The loneliness and rejection hurt so much.

Grace’s family, once so supportive, will no longer talk to me, somehow blaming me for this tragedy? Thinking I should have protected her somehow?

Christy as you know I have been talking and writing about this for a while. It seems that no one Is able to take responsibility, and the conclusion as to why is very disturbing. The RCMP culture or brother and sisterhood seem to have a code that first looks after their own and then you and I. Fixing this “cultural ” or “code” problem has to start . The only way that will and can happen is a complete cleansing of the top officials and start a fresh. Not an easy task, but I cannot see another ‘Real Solution’. JVR

The Crown won’t lay drunk driving charges against the Mountie who killed a Tsawassen motorcyclist. This is also the same Mountie who was involved the deadly tasering at YVR – a case in which he also miraculously eluded being charged. Maybe it’s time we stopped letting the Crown make these decisions. They lack judgement!
