Representatives of the world’s science academies released a report on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared the 2007 Nobel Prize with Al Gore. Last year, a series of errors embarrassed the authors of the climate report. For example the report erred in how fast the Himalayan glaciers are melting. The InterAcademy Council, a collection of the world’s science academies, said the climate change group overall performs well. The council said, however, it needs an executive director, more openness and regular leadership changes. It also urged stronger enforcement of how it reviews its research.

DR. SAM GUTMANEMERGENCY-ROOM DOCTOR AT LIONS GATE HOSPITAL, WAS IN CHARGE OF SAFETY AT THE RECENT UFC 115 IN VANCOUVER Re: The Canadian Medical Association is calling for a ban on mixed martial arts in Canada. Delegates at the CMA’s annual meeting voted Wednesday to have the doctors group seek a government ban on the sport. But doctors passed a resolution calling for a ban on MMA “prizefighting,” as opposed to recreational pursuit of the sport. Those in favour of trying to deliver a knockout punch to MMA say the sport puts fighters at risk of severe head trauma and other injuries that could have lifelong effects. They argue that unlike sports like hockey and skiing, the intent of mixed martial arts is to incapacitate one’s opponent. We hear why Sam says his colleagues are misguided about MMA injuries, and that the new wording of this resolution is worse, and is going to put a lot more people at risk because it’s the amateur events where people are getting hurt.
